“In painting still lifes, there is an importance in trying to understand time and place”
I am a painter and writer born in the States, married to Annette and living and working in Bray, County Wicklow, in the Republic of Ireland. This is a particularly beautiful area to live, near forests, mountains and the sea; ideal for landscapes and seascapes. This land and people are also influenced by a strong creative and spiritual presence. It’s a privilege to be practicing my art here.
My art practice has been evolving from a mainly figurative approach to drawing, painting and prints (which I still love). For the past few years, I've been working on more Pop Art, political and psychedelic-influenced artworks.
This has been an interesting process, and I think that it has a lot to do with my being able to put more time into my art, since moving into my current studio a few years ago. These influences come from my childhood love of cartoons and classic animation and my adolescence, where I developed a love of underground comix art and psychedelic imagery, via record album and poster art prints.
I am convinced that the more we have a chance to practice our art, not only are our skills and art practice more defined, but there is also a sort of alchemy or chemical reaction that can develop, if we allow it to. Another important element for me currently is the sense of 'play', and a more free and lively exploration of artistic ideas.
An amazing journey!
