Big Bray Head. Oil on canvas. 85cm x 65cm, framed. For sale.
Bray Head is one of the most important landmarks in North Wicklow. It impressively juts out of the sea and is the source of many wonderful walks and stunning views. It’s been the inspiration of many painters, and generally it is painted from the seaside promenade, which includes many street lights and buildings in the view.
I thought that it would be good to paint the view itself, just from the sea, giving a simple directness. The main challenge was dealing with the rapid changes in colour, as the painting was done in late spring, and the landscape was really changing from day to day. Also interesting was trying to get the effects of water, waves etc. while keeping to the integrity of mark making.
