This began as quite a tight work, showing the four elements. The original inspiration was Rick Griffin’s amazing artwork for the Grateful Dead’s Aoxomoxoa album. Someone kindly suggested that I was staying too close to the graphic dynamics of that work, and that I had to loosen up, particularly with the freedom of colour and mark making. I also wanted to go for it and try not to hold back anything, which meant somewhat of a sacrifice to the painting’s structure. A happy, at times exasperating, and intense experience for sure….
