Clearwater Cove, Monkstown.
Oil on canvas. 62cm x 70cm, framed. In private collection, France.
Painted directly from the balcony of our then flat in Monkstown, South Dublin. Monkstown is a beautiful leafy area, located on the South Dublin coast. In this painting, I was trying to explore and reconcile the reality of the woods with pure shapes of colour relating to each other and thereby creating a sense of ‘space and place’.
The optical effect of the disappearing edge of the wall closest to me on the left, and the simple shapes of the balcony railing are intended to anchor the more abstract foliage and reinforce the sense of place.
